William Hogarth School in Chiswick West London, named after the famous local painter and printmaker from the 1700’s William Hogarth, opened in 2001. A problem arose over the following years of needing to provide more school places for more local pupils. The site could not be extended so a new build was not an option, however the school had been originally built with a school hall and a gym, and so an opportunity arose to convert the gym space into two fit for purpose classrooms.
The local Borough Council of Hounslow wanted to ensure that the retrofitting and conversion used green initiatives and helped to provide a sustainable environment to support future learning.
With the change of use of the schools gym into two new high tech clas srooms the lighting required was going to be a challenge architecturally and aesthetically. The gym had very high ceilings with tall windows so the new suspended ceiling was still too high to sustain the light levels needed for the classroom with the existing lighting that was in place around the rest of the school.
Exled were invited to audit the site and offer a solution that would solve the poor light levels but also have a carbon reduction incentive and be cost effective, as they would need to see quick paybacks in energy consumption.
The LED Lighting Solution:
By changing the light outlay in the gym to a 600 x 600 grid system and using the findings of the Lux Plot provided by the technical team at Exled, the arrangement of the lighting was the key to achieving the maximum gain with the maximum payback terms.
The use of the Nova Panel was the ultimate solution providing a powerful uniformed light from only 39 Watts, in comparison to the existing lighting choice of 4 x 18 Fluorescent tubes that use 80 Watts, the Nova Panel creates a 51% energy saving. Over the other areas of the school that need to be improved the Zen Bulkhead was implemented to help the Classroom entrances be better illuminated.
Lighting Phase 1 has been completed at William Hogarth Primary School with the installation of 32 Nova Panels over the two converted classrooms. Future improvements for the School’s lighting are now being planned with the use of Exled’s commercial LED lighting range; include converting all of the classrooms to energy saving LED, retrofitting the corridor lighting and changing the external lighting. With the use of LED lighting the School will improve the light quality across all areas and reduce the energy consumption and carbon emissions, helping to promote a sustainable future.
The feedback from the Pupils and Staff has been very positive with comments on how great the new lighting looks and that it’s a brighter happier environment to learn in.
“I have recommended Exled and their commercial LED lighting solutions to the other 92 primary and 14 secondary schools across the Borough and we are looking to use this school as the showcase locally where you can see the benefits of these lights in action.” Ian Martin, Building Surveyor, London Borough of Hounslow, Corporate Property & Co-ordination Environment Department.
